How to Make Homemade Muscadine Wine - Step by step Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Grapes: Start by thoroughly washing the muscadine grapes under cold running water to remove any dirt or debris. Remove the stems from the grapes and discard any damaged or spoiled fruit.
  2. Crush the Grapes: Using a potato masher or a clean pair of hands, crush the muscadine grapes in a large, clean container. You want to break open the skins to release the juices while leaving the seeds intact.
  3. Add Sugar: Transfer the crushed grapes to a large fermentation vessel, such as a glass carboy or food-grade plastic bucket. Add the granulated sugar to the crushed grapes and stir well to dissolve the sugar completely.
  4. Add Water: Fill the fermentation vessel with enough water to cover the crushed grapes and sugar mixture. Leave some space at the top of the vessel to allow for fermentation gases to escape.
  5. Add Wine Yeast: Sprinkle the wine yeast over the surface of the grape mixture and stir gently to incorporate. The yeast will kick-start the fermentation process, converting the sugars in the grapes into alcohol.

  9. Secondary Fermentation: Cover the clean fermentation vessel and return it to the cool, dark area to continue fermenting for an additional 4-6 weeks. During this time, the wine will clarify and develop its flavor profile.
  10. Bottling: Once the wine has finished fermenting and is clear, it is ready to be bottled. Use clean, sterilized bottles and a siphon to transfer the wine from the fermentation vessel into the bottles. Seal the bottles with cork or screw caps.
  11. Aging: Store the bottled wine in a cool, dark place for at least 6 months to allow the flavors to mellow and mature. Muscadine wine benefits from aging and will continue to improve over time.
